Squaw Peak Overlook is the perfect place to watch the sunset glitter off Utah Lake as it sets behind the mountain ridge.
Overview: At this overlook you will catch gorgeous views of Utah Lake and watch the city light up far below. Squaw Peak Overlook is jokingly referred to as ‘Makeout Point’ by the local college students. While you will see many couples soaking up the view, you will also see quite a few families. Plan ahead because the small parking lot at this overlook fills up quickly!
Also keep in mind that the road up to the overlook is serpentine and steep. I have seen sedans make it up this road, but if your car is known for struggling uphill…this might not be the best choice for you! (I would suggest trying to catch the sunset on the pier of Utah Lake instead.)
If you are feeling up for a longer adventure, check out the Buffalo Peak trailhead which starts at the Squaw Peak Overlook. You can find details on that hike here.
Tips:
- If you are looking for a place to stargaze this is not the place! The lights from the city will make it hard to see the stars, so I recommend traveling up Provo Canyon for stargazing. I hear Big Springs is a popular stargazing park up Provo Canyon.
If you have a beautiful sunset photo from the Squaw Peak Overlook please send it to us and we will add it to this post! It would be so cool to see all the different sunsets together! (Just use the ‘Contact Us’ tab at the top of the site or leave a comment!) Thanks!
Location: From I-15, take Exit 272 eastbound for 3.7 miles until you come to the turnoff for I-189 (aka Provo Canyon Road). Head northeast through the mouth of Provo Canyon for ~1.8 miles. On the right, you should see the turnoff for Squaw Peak road. Follow the road for 4.1 miles until you come to the ‘T’ in the road. Go west to the Squaw Peak Overlook parking lot.
