Silver Lake trail in AF canyon leads to is a pristine alpine lake and a couple of lovely waterfalls. This trail is only 4.8 miles round trip, but the elevation gain is tough. We did it with our toddler in her Deuter carrier and the whole adventure took about 4 hours.
This trail is also hiding one of my new favorite waterfalls in Utah. You will see the waterfall towards the end of the hike, just before you start your final ascent to the lake.
Be warned: this trail is located in the Lone Peak Wilderness Area which, in my experience, means it gets rocky and steep. I swear – we saw the Lone Peak Wilderness sign about a fourth of the way up and I groaned. Bell’s Canyon Waterfall is also in the Lone Peak Wilderness and it was difficult hike too.
This hike is tough, but very rewarding. The teal waters of Silver Lake, the waterfalls and the abundance of wildflowers will more than make up for all your hard work. Find more trail details below.
- When we went at the end of June the wildflowers were blooming.
- I wouldn’t recommend this hike for walking toddlers.
- This trail is located up a moderately rugged dirt road that switch backs up to Silver Lake Flat (not to be confused with the Silver Lake you are hiking to). We made it up in our 1998 Honda CRV.
- Silver Lake and Silver Lake Flat are both well stocked with fish – if that is your thing.
- You can camp at Silver Lake, but there are very few spot suitable for setting up a tent.
