The Hidden Falls trail up Big Cottonwood canyon is a short adventure good for a quick escape. The trail to Hidden Falls is extremely short, but you could easily combine it with the Mill B North trail (located at the same parking area). I haven’t completed the Mill B North Trail, but I did a portion of it and I am itching to go back.

I actually went to these falls on a rainy day, so the ‘micro’ trail was perfect for us. I did run into a little trouble finding the trail up to the falls, though. The spring runoff made the river too deep to cross, and crossing the fallen tree trunks was a bit tricky with a kid on my back. Luckily, I discovered an easier way that took you right next the waterfall.

If you look at the pictures above, you will see a giant boulder next to some stairs. The easiest path to Hidden Falls is behind that boulder (do not continue past the stairs and up the switchbacks because that is the Mill B North trail).

The makeshift trail follows the edge of the river until you reach the falls. Kids not in carriers might need a helping hand every so often.

Another cool aspect of this trail is a little mine that has been closed off. It was fun to holler into the mine and listen to the echo back. Do not enter this mine and do not light a fire next to it. The sign on the mine has been graffitied, but I did manage to read some text that said it used to be a mine for natural gas.

Overall I really enjoyed this little trail, but don’t expect it to take you more than 15 minutes.

  • Bring a flashlight! I was wishing we had a flashlight to shine into the mine to see how far it went.
  • This trail is short! Combine it with another trail if you are wanting more of a hike.
  • The parking area for this trail is tricky and tiny. It is located in the middle of the super tight S curve. Also, you will have to cross the road to get to the trail from the parking area. Be careful!
